A Harvest Lunch Under the Changing Leaves

Autumn is my favorite time of year next to spring. I love the changing leaves and the fresh flavors, from food, to brews, and of course wine. Although, I feel like I can do without summer, the bounty that comes from the heat and sun is very much desirable.

Today, I must have been eager to hang out under our maple tree. I decided to have a little outdoor lunch under its changing leaves. This tree is the perfect sitting spot to entertain and relax. We hang lanterns and other decorations from its bows creating a generously tranquil atmosphere.

It always amazes me how we can create this quiet spot when we live in a city-like home. We have neighbors on either side of us as we share property lines and a very busy main street one block over. So being able to create a soothing spot with plenty of plants and trees is important to me.

I tossed together some items we had (in our fridge and the garden) to make this delicious homemade pizza. I made a large batch of pizza dough a few days ago and this was the perfect opportunity to use the remaining dough. I roasted pepper, broccoli, and tomatoes from our garden to create a divine spread.

This roasted peppers, tomatoes, and broccoli pizza is topped with a mix of goat and cheddar cheese. If you have never tried it I high recommend it. You will be pleasantly surprised.

The harvest of peppers and tomatoes came from yesterday’s garden activities. My daughter’s favorite chore is to pick the ripe fruits and vegetables form our raised garden beds. She brought in so many items I knew we should use them right away. So I roasted them in a very hot oven for a few minutes. What we don’t use today will be placed in the freezer for later.

This is a perfect way to treat friends to a fall themed lunch. Open a bottle of your favorite wine and share a fabulous harvest pizza in your favorite natural spot!

I hope you enjoy autumn before it goes.
There are many wonderful flavors to sample and outdoor spots to rest

Taking the Handmade Pledge!

Every year around this time, I renew my pledge to buy handmade items from local and somewhat local artisans.

As an Artisan, I understand how important it is to buy from small individually owned and operated businesses. In the past 50 years or so we have made a habit (as a whole) of buying from big “box” stores selling mass produced items. We are now seeing the issues this buying mindset brings to our communities.

By supporting these large stores who buy their products from countries that condone low wages for their workers and a sever lack of human rights... we are encouraging the mistreatment of our economy and the people in these countries. When we buy from the companies who support this mindset we are contributing to the problems.

“We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”
--Albert Einstein

In addition, we are no longer supporting our economy when we choose cheap mass produced items form big box stores. When we spend our money on items that are not made here, we are supporting another country’s economy.

We hear time and again that we need to support small locally owned and operated businesses in order to create strong local economies. Only this will build local economies strong enough to weather the dips and hurricanes caused by outside influences. So why don’t we do this?

I have heard the excuses. “It’s too expensive?” I can’t find anyone in my area.” And so on…

It is easier than you think.

On average for every $100.00 spent in our local economy $73.00 of those dollars remains in the community. Compare that to $100.00 spent at a box store, only $43.00 remain in the community.

Shifting only 10% of your buying habits would generate MILLIONS of dollars for our parks, schools, roads, and more. You can make a huge impact by switching your habits just a little.

That's only $10 out of every $100 you spend each week. I am sure out of all the spending you do each week/month; you can carve out $10.00 of every $100.00 you spend for a local artisan.

Take baby steps.  You may know realize how much of difference you can make, but you habits and actions matter a great deal .

Need more incentive?
Here are the top 10 reasons you want to buy local.
Top Ten reasons to Think Local - Buy Local - Be Local
1.    Buy Local -- Support yourself: Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms -- continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community.(Click here to see summaries of a variety of economic impact studies; these include case studies showing that locally-owned businesses generate a premium in enhanced economic impact to the community and our tax base.)
2.    Support community groups: Non-profit organizations receive an average 250% more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses.
3.    Keep our community unique: Where we shop, where we eat and have fun -- all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. Our tourism businesses also benefit.  “When people go on vacation they generally seek out destinations that offer them the sense of being someplace, not just anyplace.” ~ Richard Moe, President, National Historic Preservation Trust
4.    Reduce environmental impact: Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.
5.    Create more good jobs: Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community, provide the most jobs to residents.
6.    Get better service: Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers.
7.    Invest in community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future.
8.    Put your taxes to good use: Local businesses in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community.
9.    Buy what you want, not what someone wants you to buy: A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term.  A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based not on a national sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.
10.  Encourage local prosperity: A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.
Think local first + Buy local when you can = Being a local!

So don't delay! Take the handmade pledge and support your community! Get to know your local artisans and the treasures they have in store for you!

The Elegantly Haunted Top 10 DIY Halloween Props & Decorations

If you are like me, you are a little disappointed with most of the cheap Halloween props on the market. I admit that every season I hope for a true wow factor and more and more I am sorely let down.

I feel like the Halloween super stores are dropping the disembodied head when it comes to really amazing Halloween props and decorations. Even Grandin Road seems to be moving toward the cheaper looking and made items.

This has led me to create my own props to complete my Halloween decorating themes. If you feel the same, then this is a fabulous place to be.

Below are my top ten picks for Halloween DIY projects. The blogs and sites I feature below have impressed me with their creativity and ingenuity. A few have even taken ideas I have used for YEARS and made them better.

If you have the time and the energy to create these wonderful props and decorations it will be well worth the effort.

Happy Halloween!!!

10. Halloween Bats Every year we makes something like these bat and stick them all over the place. I love the mobile idea and I am thinking of some great ways to incorporate this into my own spooky forest theme.

9. Spell Bottle Labels – Halloween is not complete without Witches and all their magical components. Here is a great tutorial on how to make your own spell bottles & labels using glass you might have around the home.

8. Paranormal Portraits - Of course the big magazines like Country Living give us great ideas. We should expect nothing less. Here is one idea I really like.

7. Soiled Jars – “What the heck?” Yes! That was my first though too, but when I saw these I changed my tune. They offer a very cool look without a lot of expense or effort. Check it out…

6. Cheese Cloth Spirits – I did something similar to this many years ago. It involved a balloon, cheese cloth, and lots of white glue. This seems to be a better version. Thank you Martha!!

5. Glowing Drinks – To add to the ambience of any Halloween party or costume, you need a cool drink. Here is a very good idea you can create. http://www.ourbestbites.com/2010/09/kids-in-the-kitchen-glow-in-the-dark-food-magic-colors-and-giant-bubbles/

4. Monster Mud Reaper – This is a project where you can create a large life size grim reaper holding a lantern. Add some seriously spooky atmosphere to your party or general décor. The tutorial has great set by step photos and instruction to help you construct your reaper.

3. DIY Gravestones – If you have seen the prices of the foam gravestone in stores you will understand why I started making my own. This method is really easy. You can get very intricate or remain basic with foam. It is all about the look you desire. I also found that I can get dozens of gravestones for less than it would cost me to buy one at the store.

2. Chicken Wire Ghosts – I am sure you have seen the ghost dresses made of chicken wire, but I think this one takes the cake! The photo alone spooked me! It is so creepy cool!!! Check it out!

1. Crashed Witch – To be honest I hated the crashed witch you normally see pasted to trees and front doors. Don’t get me wrong the concept is FABULOUS. I give 10 out of 10 for creativity, BUT the execution needed work. Dave Lowe, has taken this idea and made it phenomenal!!! You have to click this link to see.

Well there they are… my top 10 DIY props and decorations!

As promised The distressed leaf tutorial is HERE!!! Hooray!

Elegantly Haunted
I am a tutorial NUT! I love to watch how other creative people create!!! It inspires me and encourages me to make beautiful keepsakes.

I like to keep things short and simple, and there really isn't a whole lot to distressing leaves. The real challenge is deciding what to do once you have several dozen leaves distressed. Its like they are all dressed up and no where to go.

I know all you DIY fanatics out there will create some marvelous things with this technique! Birds of a feather....
Elegantly Haunted

READY? SET? Here we go!

Materials you will need:
  • Heavy card stock in various fall colors
  • Leaf template or punch
  • Embossing Stylus, fine tip
  • Distress Ink and applicator
  • Distress Ink in your favorite shades
  • Embossing pad (I use and old mouse pad)
  • A Craft Mat

Directions:
1. Select your desired colors of card stock and cut leaf shapes using your preferred method.

2. Emboss (draw) leaf ribs into each leaf using your stylus and embossing mat. Be careful not to puncture your leaf with the stylus. You will want to do several dozen leaves.

3. Remove embossing mat and stylus.

4. Lay your craft mat down on your work surface.

5. Place your embossed leaf on the Craft Mat and prime your ink applicator with your distress ink.

6. Work your way around the edge of each leaf in a circular motion inking the edges of each leaf.

8. Lightly rub the applicator on the center of the leaf, over the embossed ribs of your leaf to give them definition.

9. Repeat this process for all your leaves changing the color of your distress ink as necessary. DONE!!

Depending on what project you decide on, you might be distressing leaves for a while. Make this an afternoon project complete with your favorite music and a glass of wine!

The leaves you see in this tutorial went toward the creation of one of my fall wreaths, as well as some greeting card embellishments.

Operation Write Home. Sending our troops some hope and encouragement.

Those of you out there who know me, know that I am always volunteering myself.

Maybe I am crazy or maybe I just like to keep myself overly busy… OR maybe it’s a little of both.
All kidding aside, I believe in community. I believe we all need to be a part of our community if we expect it to thrive and flourish healthfully.

Most recently, I blogged about my involvement with Teen Battle Chef and the delightful food created by the kids in the program. Despite the sweltering heat and humidity the kids did an amazing job working together, creating new friendships, and cuisine.  Yum Yum!

So what is my next big project? Well! I am so glad you asked.

I am happy to be a part of Operation Write Home. This organization started by Sandy Ollnock in 2007, has been sending quality handmade greeting cards to our troops. Over 2 million to be more exact! WOW!

The whole point of this organization is to help our troops remain in touch with their families and friends while they are away. No, it’s more than that; it’s about the human element and remaining kind in times of turmoil. It’s about sending some love, hope, and encouragement to those who need it. Sandy Ollnock has touched the hearts of countless men and women through her generous deeds. And we can too!

This organization is right up my alley. *Happy Dance*

So where does this “we” come into the equation? Well, I have a goal to meet, and I need your help! From now and until the end of 2013, I plan to make and send one handmade card for each card you purchase from Elegantly Haunted. YES! One for one!

This is my way of spreading the word about Operation Write Home, and getting a serious volume of cards over to our troops. I will be making Halloween cards, fall cards, Thanksgiving cards, winter and Christmas cards! I am so excited I can hardly stand it!

My number goal is 500 cards!!! See, now you know why I need your help. 500 cards is a BIG number! I am sure we can do it, but your support is essential! See there is that community thing!!!

Your part is easy. You’re going to purchase greeting cards for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, etc., right? So why not make your card purchases go further? When you need a card (or pack of cards) think of Operation Write Home, and then think of Elegantly Haunted. You’ll be doing double the good deed this year. Winner, winner, chicken dinner!!!

Oh! And there is one other thing you need to do. TELL EVERYONE!! Spread the word and let’s make this happen! I have links below you can share. Encourage your family and friends to visit my sites for their own greeting card needs.

See! I told you your job was easy! *wink*

So what are you waiting for? Let’s get this party started!!!
I look forward to sending out all 500 cards!!
& I look forward to your support!

Cheers!!!

Small Businesses Donate More...

I saw this photo on the Independent We Stand Fan Page and could not agree more with the statement.

Local small businesses really do donate more! I am a living example.

My name is Brandy Boswell, and I am the Artist and Owner of Elegantly Haunted. This is my blog about my business, my involvement in the community, and my place with you in society.

I often laugh when I see big signs at chain stores claiming that they give X-amount back to the community. In my head I ask, “Well, which community? Because, I don’t see any of your big money going back into this community.”

Yes! I talk to myself a lot. It’s how I get through the day.

I see more small business owners donating far more resources than I have ever witnessed from a large chain. Small businesses like me do more than just throw money at a cause; we also donate our time, and our energy. We ever go further than that.  When we are passionate about a cause our employees join in as well.

As small local & independent business owners we are able to clearly see what causes need our attention. After all, this is our community. We see what cracks need to be filled, and where resources lack. We are not dictated by a distant board of directors whose only concern is looking good in the media. We get to decide who, what, where, when, and why. When we are passionate about a cause, that passion is something we are freely able to support. Our passions become our focus, thus making our decisions to donate more fulfilling and effective in the community.

I love our freedom to donate. As small business owners we are able to determine exactly how we will donate. Being independent means we choose if we will donate monetarily, personally, or both. Of course, any factors play into these choices. These factors are as diverse as the individual business owners themselves.

Think of all the small businesses in your community, and think of how different they all are. Even if you compare two boutiques selling similar items, they will feel and look very different in every way. It’s like comparing two multi-faceted stones. Each will have a unique sparkle, hue, and look. If you can’t think of any small businesses in your area, I think you are in the right place. It’s time for you to start shopping local and independent.

I digress, what I was trying to say is that the different personality of each business will help determine which organizations get that businesses attention. This diversity is wonderful because it spreads the available resources around creating a balance that is much needed everywhere.

I just spent 8 days over the last two weeks donating my time, energy, and money to a cause I’m passionate about. When I saw the photo above on Facebook I was instantly inspired to write something about I, a small business owner, donates.

If you have been following me lately, you know I am passionate about Teen battle Chef. I have essentially taken two weeks off from my creative business to help lead and run the Teen Battle Chef Summer program at Spoutwood Farm. Since I call the shots I was able to do what I like and give as much as possible to a deserving cause.

I have to say this; it was very hot these past two weeks. The last three days being the hottest of the year. No one worked as hard as Liz Leiwand, and the kids participating in the program. Not one Chef complained about the heat. They all took our instructions with ease and did a phenomenal job presenting for their teams. This is a quote from Liz at the end of our program this year, I think she says it all, “…what an awesome end to our Teen Battle Chef program. The kids transformed into CHEFS right before our eyes.

Salad Niçoise

created by Teen Battle Chef participants 2013

Fruit and Yogurt Parfaits, Day 2 of the TCB Summer Program

Mussels Provecal, Day 6

It is because of the transformations we see in these kids, and the message we teach through this program, that I am passionate about donating to TCB and the CHEFS. I volunteer my time and donate financially to this cause without hesitation or regret. Above and beyond my efforts, are those of Rob and Lucy Wood, owners of Spoutwood Farm. Spoutwood is anchored in our community, giving so much support to all who participate with the farm.

Community is important to me. I value the lessons we learn together, the diversity we share, and the relationships we forge. It is only fitting that my values are reflected in my business practices. Community is essential to our strength. When we support one another, we create a community and economy that will weather any storm.

When small business is involved with the community, and vice versa, there a personal impact made.  Personal investment is what makes our community richer.

So get out there and support your community!

How to Stay Cool and Stylish When the Heat and Humidity is Rising...

How do we stay cool today???

I thought of this because at 9am the temperature was already at 86 degrees, with what feels like 100% humidity. I tried to take the dog for our usual walk at Lake Redman, but could not do it.

Lola and I were miserable. The heat was bad enough, and then the bugs were... well... buggin'.

I think Lola drank half a bowl of water before we got in the car to come home.

So in light of all this heat, here are my tips for staying cool.
  1. Locate your favorite glass.
  2. Make yourself an ICE COLD beverage!! Maybe something fruity... yummmm....
  3. If you can, get into the air conditioning... DUH right? If you can't then find a nice fan or a cool place and plop yourself down.
  4. DON'T MOVE!

Yep I think that just about covers it.

WOOT! I have my favorite glass and a delicious fruity Peach Iced Tea.

As always, I love to shop local so I stopped at Brown's Orchards and Farm Market today to get some fresh fruit. Brown's has some gorgeous peaches that are beautifully ripe.

I bought the large box of peaches so I could make this fabulous tea and have left overs. Tomorrow I will share my remaining peaches with the Teen Battle Chef group at Spoutwood Farm on our last day of this year's summer camp.

I'm ready for the heat!!! Oh wait... I need another tea...

Stay cool out there!

Teen battle Chef, Summer Program at Spoutwood Farm, 2013

Today was another Teen Battle Chef Day! This Teen Battle Chef session was France!

To prompt our French theme the recipes we created were Salade Niçoise and Mussels Provencal. This is one of my most favorite TBC days. The salad always turns out beautifully and the mussels are delicious. These are great summer dishes to prepare.

Let’s start with the salad.  I am always excited to put this recipe together. There are so many ingredients and the presentation is gorgeous! I am partial to seeing layers of fresh whole food carefully placed on a platter, but I think just about anyone would be after seeing this dish.

Our Chefs began with the potatoes, eggs, and green beans. They hard boil the eggs, and cook the potatoes, but only blanch the beans. When we create this recipe we want the beans crisp and green, so blanching is best. While some of our Chefs did the cooking portion of the dish, the rest clean and chop the remaining ingredients. There are a variety of fresh ingredients to slice and chop like fresh lemon and basil for our dressing.

Salade Niçoise is one of those dishes where you can place in a variety of ingredients. Traditionally we use potatoes, veggies, tuna, and egg.

While the Blue team was working on their salad, the Red team worked on the Mussels Provencal. This recipe incorporates fresh mussels, pasta, fennel, and other fresh ingredients to make a very light pasta dish.

The Red Team Chefs worked hard chopping onion, fennel, and cleaning mussels. As the Red Team begins layering their flavors they also begin creating a delicious sauce in the bottom of their stock pot. This broth-like sauce is the melding of the mussels, fennel, white wine, and stock placed into the pot as the mussel cook.
If you have never had mussels, try this dish!

It was a very hot day as we cooked and cleaned. I am glad to be inside now. The Chefs did a wonderful job encouraging one another and remembering to drink their water. I look forward to tomorrow.

Teen Battle Chef and Spoutwood Farm CHEFS in action! Day 2...

Nobody can do everything,
but everyone can do something.
~Author Unknown

Day 2… Breakfast Boot Camp and BLOOPERS!! & The Raspberries Were Calling!!!

I know our veteran CHEFS love Day 2.

This is when we teach the kids about food safety. The leaders choose two of our CHEFS to perform a really horrible demonstration of assembling a fruit and yogurt parfait while talking (or rather not talking) to the crowd about their dish. I’ll get to more of this later.

The whole theme of today was breakfast. We made Fruit and Yogurt Parfaits and Egg Sandwiches. The group picked fresh Raspberries from Spoutwood’s own Raspberry bushes just bursting with berries. We also used local peaches, and blueberries.

BUT... before we allowed our group to indulge in this fruity goodness our Veteran CHEFS did some fabulous bloopers to teach our kids about the importance of keeping things clean and safe. There was a sloppy mess and maybe even some hair in the mix when they were finished with their blooper. The whole point is to make the subject of cleanliness and safety fun. The kids enjoy the bloopers as it lets them complete with one another to see who can spot the most mistakes and potential issues in the kitchen.

After the bloopers each of us had a chance to create our own parfait. As we discussed health and food safety, we all got to taste the delicious fresh ingredients available. Many of the kids went back for seconds. I can’t blame them!

After this we made a very yummy egg sandwich. I unfortunately don’t have a photo of these beauties. It was my turn to demonstrate with one of our other leaders. So we will have to use our imaginations for this.

Think of a thick slice of whole grain bread complete with whole seeds visible in the crust, next layer on a perfectly scrambled egg, tomato slices, and finally a large whole basil leaf. Top all that off with another thick slice of whole grain bread, and enjoy! I mean REALLY! ENJOY! It’s so good!!

This is one of my favorite days because of this sandwich. I love whole fresh ingredients for breakfast. It just sets up the day to be GREAT!

Try your own version of this breakfast. Maybe you can add some red onion or use sundried tomatoes instead of fresh… Hmmmm, Sounds like a plan to me… tomorrow or maybe for dinner!
